Russia, Soviet Union. A Naval Captain’s Tunic, First Rank with Awards, Submarine Personnel

A rare and very well-preserved Soviet Navy tunic belonging to a First Rank Captain serving with submarine forces. It is constructed of white cotton-blended whipcord twill. The tunic features an integrated collar which transitions into double breast flaps. Each shoulder is adorned with a board constructed of a black wool base, bearing three gold bullion wire tresses separated by machine-embroidered black bands, and pinned with three gilded bronze stars. The boards measure 60 mm (w) x 180 mm (l) and are secured to the tunic with machine stitching at both ends. Each breast flap features a single pocket located at the lower quarter of the body, with an additional narrow horizontal pocket located at the upper left flap. It closes with three gilded magnetic metal buttons, all bearing raised anchors, on each flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the opposite flap. The interior presents plain with the exception of dual pockets, with one located at the top of each breast flap, both closed with white bakelite buttons meeting reinforced buttonholes. It is unmarked and measures approximately 530 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 620 mm and an overall body length of 800 mm. Some soiling is evident to the material, particularly near the neck, but the tunic is in an overall near extremely fine condition.

It is accompanied by an extensive array of awards and decorations which have been riveted through the material, including; an Order of the Red Star, constructed bronze with enamels, the reverse with an issue number of “1309116” and maker marked with the logo of the Soviet Mint, measuring 46.97 mm (w) x 46.11 mm (h), missing the enamel of the nine o’clock arm, in overall very fine condition; a Guards Badges, constructed of gilded bronze with multi-coloured enamels, unmarked, measuring 35.28 mm (w) x 46.69 mm (h), with some loss of gilt evident, in overall very fine condition; a Submarine Badge, constructed of silvered bronze with enamels, unmarked, measuring 31.98 mm (w) x 25.57 mm (h), with evidence of reverse clasp repair, in overall very fine condition; a Submarine Commander Badge, constructed of silvered bronze with enamels, the reverse maker marked with the logo of the Soviet Mint, measuring 68 mm (l) x 22 mm (h), in extremely fine condition; a medal bar featuring six decorations, including a Medal for Courage, a Medal for Battle Merit, a Just Cause Medal, a Great Patriotic War 20-Year Victory Medal, a Great Patriotic War 30-Year Victory Medal, and a Medal for Victory over Japan, all constructed of bronze with silvered and gilt finishes where applicable, affixed to a 175 mm-long medal bar with period original ribbons, in overall better than very fine condition; a second medal bar with five decorations, including a Medal for the 800th Anniversary of Moscow, a Jubilee Medal for 30 Years of the Soviet Army and Navy, a Jubilee Medal for 40 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR, a Jubilee Medal for 50 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR, and a Medal for Impeccable Service, all constructed of bronze with silver and gilt finishes where applicable, affixed to a 135 mm-long bar with period original ribbons, in overall near extremely fine condition, and; a Polish Cross of Merit, constructed of bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, unmarked, measuring 40.38 mm (w) x 45.44 mm (l), with most of the finish lost, in overall very fine condition.
