Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. An Army Enlisted Personnel Pickelhaube

(Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach Pickelhaube für Mannschaften). A well-preserved Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach Enlisted personnel Pickelhaube, constructed of a boiled and blackened leather shell. Situated atop the crown is a gilded brass spike perforated around the neck with ventilation holes, and which is secured in place with a baseplate featuring four rivets. A magnetic metal bar emanates from the back of the baseplate and extends down to a boiled and blackened leather neck guard. Riveted to the peak is an insignia consisting of a gilded brass plate in the form of a Prussian imperial eagle clutching an orb and sceptre, overlaid by a banner bearing an inscription of “MIT GOTT FÜR FUERST UND VATERLAND” (“WITH GOD FOR PRINCE AND FATHERLAND”), and pinned with a central eight-pointed starburst bearing a wreathed and crowned Saxe-Ernestine coat of arms. The plate measures 12.5 cm (w) x 9.5 cm (h) overall. It is flanked on each side by magnetic metal studs securing in place a black leather chinstrap, adjusted with dual functional bronze buckles. Situated beneath the studs are magnetic metal cockades, with the left side painted in a Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach green, yellow, and black colour scheme, while the right side is painted in an Imperial black, white, and red motif. The exterior features are completed with a protruding boiled and blackened leather visor, reinforced along the rim with a gilded brass bar. The interior retains an intact brown leather liner, culminating in nine fingers, each perforated at the top with an eyelet through which is looped a brown leather drawstring. An illegible maker’s mark is stamped onto the crown in black ink. The Pickelhaube measures approximately 17 cm (w) x 23.5 cm (w) x 21.5 cm (h) (inclusive of spike). Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include minor material fatigue to the shell and other leather elements, partial detachment of the rim reinforcement, and some tarnishing of the metal fixtures. It is in an overall very fine condition.
