Saxe-Weimar, State. An Order of the White Falcon, Grand Cross, Civil Division, c.1910

(Hausorden vom Weißen Falken Großkreuz für Zivilpersonen). Instituted in 1732 by Duke Ernest Augustus. (1815-1918 Issue). Civil Division. A Maltese cross constructed of gilded silver, with green-enamelled arms lined by a narrow golden border, with red-enamelled rays emanating between the arms, the centre obverse presents a white-enamelled, left-facing falcon, with a light-blue enameled eye, constructed of gilded bronze, the reverse presents a Maltese cross with white-enamelled arms, with green-enamelled rays emanating from the arms of the cross, the centre reverse presents a dark-blue enamelled oval bearing the golden motto VIGI/LANDO ASCEN/DIMUS (BY VIGILANCE WE ASCEND), surrounded by a wide, gilded bronze laurel wreath tied at the bottom with a bow, surmounted by an open, five-pointed ducal crown, measuring 49.12 mm (w) x 83.65 mm (h - inclusive of Imperial Crown with horizontally pierced ball suspension adorned by a crown), displays superior enamel manufacture, on loop for suspension from period original red sash, and in very fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
