(Albrechtsorden Komturkreuz mit Schwertern); 1879-1918 Issue. A silver gilt Latin cross with white enameled arms, with a green enameled oak wreath; the obverse with a central white enameled medallion depicting a rightward facing bust of Herzog Albrecht, surrounded by a blue enameled ring, inscribed “Albertus Animous” (Latin - Albert the Merciful), along with arabesques towards the bottom of the enameled ring; the reverse with a white enameled central medallion depicting the Saxon coat of arms, surrounded by a blue enameled ring with arabesques on the top, and “1850” on the bottom; suspended from a set of crossed swords, a hollow swivel crown, as well as a round and broad loop for suspension from a period original neck ribbon; the bottom of the six o’clock arm marked “S” for “G. A. Scharffenberg, the 9 o’clock arm marked “Dresden”, and the 3 o’clock arm depicting filing marks; measuring 53.91 mm (w) x 95.55 mm (h); weighing 50.6 grams; in overall extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The swords on these crosses were added by the recipient. The cost of adding the swords, however, was reimbursed by the chancellery afterwards. With a total of 18 of these Albrecht Order Commander Neck Badges awarded.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
