Saxony, Kingdom. An Albrecht Order, Grand Cross with Swords, by Scharffenberg of Dresden, c.1914

(Albrechts-Orden). Instituted 31 December 1850 by King Friedrich August II. Second Model 1876-1918 “Young Portrait Type.” (1901-1918). A Grand Cross with Swords constructed of gilded silver, a white-enameled Latin cross with a narrow, golden border, the corners of the arms of the cross house golden-bordered green enameled wreathed oak leaves with red enameled fruits, and crossed swords, the center obverse in white enamel featuring the right-facing head of Duke Albrecht, surrounded by a narrow golden bordered light blue enameled ring with the golden inlaid inscription “ALBERTUS ANIMOSUS”  (“Albert the Bold”), bottom completed with two golden arabesques, separated by a small six-pointed golden star, the reverse with a crowned royal coat of arms in gilt, surrounded by a blue enameled ring, dated “1850,” along with arabesques, maker mark “SCHARFFENBERG” on the three o'clock arm of the cross in addition to “DRESDEN” on the nine o’clock arm, silver hallmark “S” at the six o-clock arm of the cross, measuring 53.80 mm (w) x 88.55 mm (h - inclusive of Imperial Crown with horizontally pierced ball suspension adorned by cross), on flat suspension loop and attached to original sash; no chipping to enamels, slightly worn, in extremely fine condition.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
