Argentina, Republic. An M1891 Mauser Rifle Bayonet
This bayonet features a 400 mm long steel blade, magnetic, with a semi-sharp blade and a very sharp tip, the fuller running almost the full length of the bayonet on both sides, marked with the Argentine Republic coat-of-arms surmounted by the arched inscription in Spanish "MODELO ARGENTINO 1891" (Argentine Model 1891) and stamped with the code "S0403" on the obverse ricasso, maker marked "WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & Co SOLINGEN" on the reverse ricasso, the spine proof marked with a star above an "A". The blade is embedded into the heavy steel crossguard that is designed with a ring at one end for placement upon the barrel of a rifle, the other end with a large quillon, with steel plates embedded onto either side of the handle and held in place via two large rivets, the steel pommel with knob and slotted to receive the rifle, the bayonet measuring 518 mm in length overall. The bayonet is housed in its black-finished magnetic metal steel scabbard, the throat secured in place by a single screw, the end point finished in a ball finial, incorporating a stud on the reverse and appears to have been re-painted thereby obscuring the coded stamping, the scabbard measuring 415 mm in length. The blade exhibits light scratches overall, common to extraction and return to the scabbard, the bayonet with contact marks and moderate surface wear present on the steel grip and adjacent items, the scabbard with a few indentations along with contact marks and wear present on the black finish. Fine.
