Brazil, Independent Empire. An Order of the Rose in Gold, Knight's Cross, c.1870

(Imperial Ordem da Rosa). Instituted on 17 October 1829. Likely of French manufacture with fine attention to detail, an attractive cross in Gold consisting of a white enamelled cross with Gold framing and ball finals, with three pink enamelled roses on green laurels in each quadrant (Inspired by the motifs of roses that adorned the dress of Amélie of Leuchtenberg, wife of Emperor Pedro I), obverse centre exhibiting the hand chiseled cypher of Pedro I, blue enamelled surround with Motto AMOR E FIDELIDADE (LOVE AND FIDELITY), reverse centre presenting the institution date of 2-8-1829, and legend of PEDRO AND AMÉLIA in blue surround, adorned by a Gold elongated Imperial crown, measuring 36 mm (w) x 64 mm (h - inclusive of crown adorned by cross), weighing 17.4 grams, with blue loss to revere centre, minor compression to obverse crown, on period ribbon, otherwise very fine.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
