Brazil, Independent Empire. An Order of the Rose in Gold, Officer's Star, c.1880

(Imperial Ordem da Rosa). Instituted on 17 October 1829. An attractive French manufactured award with fine attention to detail, in Gold with a six armed white enamelled cross with ball finals, affixed to a solid multi-rayed Gold plate exhibiting hand engraved rays, with three pink enamelled roses on green laurels in each quadrant, obverse centre exhibiting the hand chiseled cypher of Pedro I, blue enamelled surround with the Motto AMOR E FIDELIDADE (LOVE AND FIDELITY), reverse with typical fine Gold pin assembly, hallmarked on catch and pin with French Gold Export mark of Mercury denoting date of export between 1879 -1910, measuring 50.8 mm (w) x 54 mm (h), weighing 31.4 grams, with section of cypher missing, minor enamel contact, overall in good/fair condition.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
