(Orden del Mérito). Instituted 1906. Type V. 1929-present issue. In bronze gilt, a multiple ray ten-pointed star, obverse superposed with a five-pointed enameled white star with ball finials, surrounded by laurel wreath, exhibiting partially enameled Chilean coat of arms, encircled by an enameled dark blue border inscribed by ORDEN DEL MERITO CHILE (Order of Merit Chile), reverse with pin assembly and dual stays, measuring 71.75 mm (w) x 73.52 mm (h), presenting oxidation on the coat of arms, with partially toned silver, and slightly detached centrepiece, good.
Footnote: The Order of Merit was instituted in Chile by the Ministry of War on September 14, 1906 as the Medal of Merit to recognize military instructors from all nations. In 1911, the Medal was divided into three grades to recognize different ranks of the recipients. In 1929, the Medal was promoted to order. It is currently awarded to foreign civilians in recognition of meritorious services to Chile.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
