Uruguay, Republic. A Yatay Campaign Medal, by J W, Chief’s Gold Medal c.1865

(Medalla del Yatay). Instituted in 1865. 1865-1870 issue. A very rare oval medal constructed in silver gilt, the obverse centre showing an engraved Uruguayan coat of arms with the inscription CAMPAÑA DEL YATAY (Yatay Campaign), the reverse presenting the inscription 17 DE AGOSTO DE 1865 (August 17, 1865), surrounded by a laurel wreath, with unusual stamped of J W, measuring 28.71 mm (w) x 38.33 mm (inclusive of ring suspension), with minor lost of gilt and stained silver, suspended by replaced original ribbon, very fine.

Footnote: The medal was awarded for participation in the Yatay Paraguay war.
