Medalla de Yatay. Instituted in 1865. In bronze, engraver marked "J" and "VV" on the reverse, measuring 28.8 mm (w) x 34 mm (h), bruised, light contact, replacement suspension, on an incorrect period ribbon, better than very fine.
Footnote: The Yatay Medal was instituted on September 30, 1865 and was awarded to the Uruguayan forces who fought in the Battle of Yatay. On August 17, 1865, at Yatay, Alliance forces led by the Uruguayan president, General Venancio Flores Barrios (1808-1868), and including 2,400 Uruguayans, attacked a Paraguayan force under Major Pedro Duarte, inflicting a severe defeat.
