(Orden al Mérito Militar). Instituted 1864. 1938-1975 Issue. A red enameled Greek cross in bronze gilt, with obverse centre featuring an enameled blue, red and white Spanish coat of arms also, reverse applique in white enamels depicting the letters “MM” (Military Merit), suspended by a typical of time period Spanish crown, measuring 41.48 mm (w) x 54.81 mm (h- inclusive of the crown), presenting minor oxidation in the crown and the reverse medallion, accompanied by original white and red ribbon on a traditional Spanish-style horizontal hanger with pinback, intact enamels, very good.
Footnote: The Order of Military Merit was created by Queen Isabel II by a royal decree of 3rd August, 1864. It was founded to reward individual acts of distinction and bravery or acts of significant service and merit by members of the Armed forces and Civil Guard. Red Distinction was awarded in time of war.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps.
