1847-1926 Issue. (Orden del Toisón de Oro) In Gold with blue enamel suspension, hallmarked 585, (14ct), measuring 24 mm (w) x 59.25 mm (h - inclusive of suspension), weighing 12.7 grams, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of the Golden Fleece was instituted by Philip III, Duke of Burgundy in 1430. It was founded as confirmation of the prosperity of Burgundy, as well as a declaration of his desire to separate the Duke of Burgundy from the Kingdom of France. Since 1847, the Order became a Civil Order, and it has been awarded to persons unrelated to Burgundy House.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
