Spain, Spanish State. A Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise, Grand Cross Set
(Orden Civil de Alfonso X El Sabio). Instituted April 11 1939 by Francisco Franco. In silver gilt, a red enamelled cross with the central medallion featuring a superimposed figure of Alfonso on a blue enamelled field, surrounded by a white ring inscribed ALFONSO X EL SABIO REY DE CASTILLA Y LEON (Alfonso X the Wise, King of Castile and Leon), the reverse is plain with a medallion featuring a red enamelled eagle on a blue orb, with the inscription ALTEROA PETO, measures 56.4mm (w) x 61.1mm (h), weighs 29.2 grams, enamel damage to blue in medallion, discolouration on white enamels, worn on full length sash, remains in very fine condition. The Star of the order, in silver gilt, presents a large red enamelled cross, the central medallion featuring a superimposed figure of Alfonso on a blue enamelled field, surrounded by a white ring inscribed ALFONSO X EL SABIO REY DE CASTILLA Y LEON (Alfonso X the Wise, King of Castile and Leon), the reverse presents a single vertical pin with dual stays, measures 78.3mm (w) x 79.15mm (h), weighs 58.0 grams, enamel wear in medallion, small chips to red enamel in arms, remains in very fine condition.
