(Red za zasluge). Instituted in 1942. In silver with red enamels, measuring 56 mm (w) x 59.5 mm (h) inclusive of its integral suspension, very light contact, on an original bow-tied ribbon and accompanied by a portion of an original sash; and Breast Star: insignia with a two-piece construction, in silver with red enamels, measuring 36.5 mm (w) x 36.5 mm (h), mounted to a frosted silver eight-pointed star base, each star point with five emanating rays, maker marked "BK" (Braća Knaus, Zagreb) and hallmarked with a Croatian goose flanked by a "III' at the left and an "A" at the right on the pin, measuring 86 mm (w) x 86 mm (h), vertical pinback. Intact enamels, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Merit was instituted on April 10, 1942 and awarded in four grades: Grand Cross, I Class, II Class and III Class, with separate insignia for Christian and Moslem recipients.
