(Nishan-i-Istiqlal). Instituted 1922. Type III. 1926-1929 Issue. Civil Division. Likely of local Afghan manufacture, sash badge consisting of an single bodied palm leaf design in blackened iron (magnetic), centre featuring an old agriculture plow, measuring 55.07 mm (w) x 49.85 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring), on period silk sash, presenting wear edges, fine condition. Accompanied by the star of the order, a multiple ray, eight pointed star in blackened iron (magnetic), obverse centre presenting the Emir's tugra (Afghan state of arms between 1926-1929) in silver, with beneath Arabic script presenting Arabic numeral 1 denoting class, reverse with flat pin assembly, measuring 76.85 mm (w) x 76.60 mm (h), with slightly detached centrepiece and minor toned silver, near to extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Independence (Nishan-i-Istiqlal) was instituted by King Habibu'llah Shah in 1911, in recognition of civilians, and military personnel, for meritorious service rendered to the state. It was reorganised by King Amanu'llah in 1924, retained and modified in 1929. It was awarded in two divisions, e.i. Military division, with crossed swords for war services, and civil division, without swords for service in peacetime. The Order had four classes.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
