Afghanistan, Kingdom. An Order of the Star, 1st Class Grand Cross, c.1927

(Nishan-i-Astour). Instituted 1920. Type III. 1926-1929 Issue. A high quality star in Gold of local Afghan manufacture, consisting of a hollow eight pointed star composed of multiple rays, slightly convex, obverse centre presenting the Emir's tugra (seal) in silver (used between 1926-1929), Arabic script surround affixed by two prongs, reverse with traditional Afghan pin assembly with vertical Gold plate and dual pin also in Gold, hand engraved makers marks on 12 and 6 o'clock arms, measuring 90 mm (w) x 91.5 mm (h), 72.2 grams, with hand engraved mark on obverse centre, slight separation of Gold plates, very fine. Accompanied by original sash of the order, in course red cotton, period, very fine. Both contained within original case of issue, wood framed with red wrapping, Emir's tugra in gold on lid, interior medal bed in velvet, good.

Footnote: Bestowed for exceptional service to the Crown by the Afghan monarch. Recipients enjoyed the titles of Sardar-i-Ala or Sardar-i-Ali before their names and also received grants of land. The original Order was disbanded in 1929

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
