(Franz Joseph Orden, Komturkreuz). Instituted on December 2, 1849. (Issued 1849-1918). This is an extremely well-preserved Franz Joseph Order Commander's Cross, presenting as a gilded bronze Latin cross with richly-detailed, red enameled arms with a black enameled double-headed crowned eagle clutching a length of chain, with a central white enameled medallion inscribed “FJ” in gilded bronze letters, with Order motto of "VIRIBUS UNITIS" ("WITH UNITED FORCES") inscribed in gilded bronze, the reverse of the cross with a central date of "1849" in gilded bronze on a white enameled background, with a swivel crown suspension, measuring 37.52 mm (w) x 69.78 mm (h), weighing 25.2 grams, in overall extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
