An extremely fine quality manufacture 1896-1918 issue Order of Berthold the First Breast Star with Swords (Orden Berthold des Ersten Bruststern vom Großkreuz mit Schwertern); a silver gilt eight-pointed star with crossed swords; the obverse with a large center red enameled medallion bearing Duke Herzog Berthold in armour on a horse, surrounded by a white enameled ring, inscribed “Gerechtigkeit ist Macht” (German - Justice is might) in gilt lettering; the reverse with a vertical pin and a non-closing hinge/catch assembly, and four hollow rivets for the attachment of the swords on the obverse; measuring 87.44 mm x 87.25 mm; weighing 76.4 grams; in virtually mint condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
