(Orden Berthold des Ersten, Kette). Instituted 1877. Manufactured as a display example in early 20th Century. In bronze gilt with red and white enamels; the chain consists of seven links depicting Berthold on a horse superimposed on red enamels, seven links depict the royal crown superimposed on red enamels, and fourteen links with a central white enameled pearl; the central “Berthold” link features a pin on the reverse for the suspension of a badge; the central “crown” link features a pinch-closure that secures the chain shut; each red enameled link features two flat-head screws that secure the enamels to the chain link, each white enameled link features a rivet on the reverse to hold the white enameled pearl in place; each larger link measures 39 mm (w) x 30 mm (h); each larger link measures 11.36 mm (w) x 23.60 mm (h); a complete collar chain, in overall better than extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
