A silver gilt Maltese cross with blue enameled arms and flames between the arms of the cross; the obverse with a central black enameled medallion bearing a silver gilt crowned cipher of King Ludwig III within a white enameled border in the form of a buckled belt with silver gilt lettering reading “Merenti” (Latin - “Merit”); the reverse with a central black enameled medallion bearing a silver gilt crowned Bavarian lion within a white enameled border in the form of a buckled belt with silver gilt numbers reading “1866”; suspended from a long ring with a period original wartime neck ribbon; marked “950” for silver content and “WC” for “Weiss & Cie., München” the loop equally marked “Weiss & Co.”, along with “900” and a crescent moon for silver content; measuring 56.70 mm (w) x 56.53 mm (h); weighing 42.2 grams; with light wear to the gilt finish from wear and age; in overall better than extremely fine condition.
