(Ordre de Léopold II). Instituted 1900. Type II. 1908-1950 Issue. A sash badge consisting of a silver gilt Maltese cross with ball finials, featuring a gilt laurel wreath in each quadrant, obverse centre in black and blue enamels depicting a superposed gilded Belgium Lion, encircled by the inscription L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE (Unity Is Strength), reverse embossed with a crowned monogram of Leopold II, adorned by Belgian Crown also in silver gilt, ring hallmarked by Belgium hallmark denoting silver fineness of .900, Brussels, with maker’s mark of P. DeGreef on officially barrel-shape frame, measuring 51.56 mm (w) x 84.22 mm (h - inclusive of its crown suspension), on an original full-length sash, near extremely fine. Accompanied by the Star of the order, a faceted five-armed silver star with alternated multi-rayed five-pointed star in silver gilt, obverse featuring a black and blue enameled insignia surmounted by a gilded crown, reverse with vertical pinback flanked by dual prongs, marked by maker’s mark "P. DeGreef 112. RUE DU MIDI BRUXELLES", measuring 83.04 mm (w) x 86.92 mm (h), with toned silver, overall very fine.
Footnote: The Order of Leopold II was named in honor of King Léopold II when he became king of the Congo Free State. The order is awarded for meritorious service to Belgium, and as a token of his personal goodwill. It can be awarded to both Belgians and foreigners, and is seen as diplomatic gift of merit.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
