Braunschweig, Dukedom. An Order of Henry the Lion, Commander Cross, by Jürgens, c.1916

(Vorläuforden Heinrichs des Löwen, Kommandeurkreuz). Instituted 25 April 1834. (1834-1918 issue). In silver gilt consisting of a Maltese Cross with ball finials and blue enameled arms, the quadrants of each arm joined by a silver crown on top of an intricate royal cypher, obverse with a central medallion depicting a white Braunschweig horse on a red enameled background, the 9 o’clock, 12 o’clock, and 3 o’clock arms with hand painted gilt wheat stocks, the six o’clock arm with a hand painted knight, reverse with a central red enameled medallion with gilt order motto of “IMMOTA FIDES” (“STEADFAST LOYALTY”), inside a gilt ring with raised Roman numerals, the 12 o’clock arm bearing a lion passant topped by a royal crown connecting to a suspension loop, flanked by green enameled laurel leaves, silver hallmarked on interior of elongated suspension loop, also presenting the maker mark for H.Jürgens, measuring 58.52 mm (w) x 86.22 mm (h), weighing 45.0 grams, accompanied by its shortened period original neck ribbon, constructed of red and yellow ribbon, measuring 190 mm in length, tarnishing of silver and flecking of enamels evident, otherwise in very fine condition.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
