Footnote: Congress authorized the current and only style of the Air Force Medal of Honor on July 6, 1960. The medal was designed by the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry and replaced the Army design of the Medal of Honor as the award given to members of the Air Force after November 1, 1965. As with all other Medals of Honor, the Air Force design of the Medal of Honor is awarded for acts of personal bravery of self-sacrifice during combat that are so conspicuous as to clearly distinguished the individual for gallantry and intrepidity above his comrades.
