(Dannebrogordenen). Instituted in 1219 by King Valdemar II, and re-instituted by King Christian V in 1671. Christian VIII Issue. Of early manufacture, consisting of twenty-eight white and red enamel Dannebrog crosses in bronze gilt, alternating positions with fourteen crowned cypher of King Christian V "C5", and fourteen crowned cypher of King Valdemar II "W", both cyphers in bronze gilt, reverse presenting double-sided design, measuring 1,035 mm length, the reverse with two hooks to wear on shoulders, one to wear on neck, and another one to wear on chest button, each of the links with dual loops on either side, the top loop on each connected by an extra link, the bottom loop on each connected by three links, exhibiting white enamels repair on multiple crosses, with slight gilt wear and oxidation, good.
Footnote: The Order of Dannebrog was presumably established by King Waldemar II in 1219; however, there is no evidence of this Order being established by King Valdemar II, although the decorations consist of his cypher since 1219. It was later re-instituted by King Christian V, in honour of the birth of his first son (King Frederik IV) in 1671, this Order originally consisted of one class and was conferred upon noblemen, princes of royal blood, and high dignitaries. To date, the Order is awarded to recognize individuals who have rendered outstanding, and distinctive military or civil service, as well as, contribution to the sciences, arts, or business.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
