(Leopold-Orden Ritterkreuz mit Kleiner Dekoration und Schwertern). Issued 1914-1918, Type III. A cross pattee constructed of gold, with red and white enameled arms; the obverse with a central red enameled medallion, inscribed “F.I.A.” in gold for “Franciscus Imperator Austriae”, surrounded by a ring of white enamels, inscribed “INTEGRITATI ET MERITO” (Latin - Integrity and Merit); the reverse witha central white enameled medallion, inscribed “OPES REGUM CORDA SUBDITORUM” (Latin - The deeds of the Kings win the hearts of their subjects); suspended from a hollow and partially enameled gold royal crown; on loop for suspension - marked “FR” for “C.F. Rothe” with a Vienna gold mark; suspended from its period original ribbon, featuring a small decoration for a Commander cross, along with silver swords; measuring 30.92 mm (w) x 55.24 mm (h); weighing 12.6 grams; in overall near mint condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
