(Leopold Orden Ritterkreuz mit Kriegsdekoration). Instituted on 8 January 1808 by Emperor Franz I. Type III. (1914-1918 Issue). A cross pattée constructed of bronze gilt with red and white enamelled arms, the obverse with a central red enamelled medallion, inscribed F.I.A for Franciscus Imperator Austriae, surrounded by a ring of white enamels, inscribed Integritati et Merito (Latin - Integrity and Merit), the reverse with a central white enamelled medallion, inscribed Opes regum corda subditorum (Latin - The deeds of the Kings win the hearts of their subjects), surrounded by a gilt oak wreath, suspended from a hollow and partially enamelled royal crown, marked by an unidentifiable maker, measuring 31.11 mm (w) x 58.98 mm (h), weighing 13.5 grams, on loop for suspension from its partially frayed period original ribbon, and in overall extremely fine condition.
Footnote: During the reign of Franz I, 316 Austrian-Hungarians received a Knight’s Cross, 375 foreigners. During the reign of Ferdinand I, 541 Austrian-Hungarians received a Knight’s Cross, 448 foreigners. During the reign of Franz Joseph I, 1034 Austrian-Hungarians received a Knight’s Cross, 65 foreigners. During the reign of Karl I, 575 Austrian-Hungarians received a Knight’s Cross, 20 foreigners, and 8 received it a second time.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
