(Tapferkeitsmedaillen). A pair of two bravery medals. Instituted on 19 July 1789. Type IV, Ring Suspension, Karl I. (Issued 1917-1918).
1) A round medal for bravery constructed of silvered bronze, the obverse depicts the portrait of Karl I circled by the inscription “CAROLVS D.G.IMP.AUST.REX BOH.ETC.ET REX APOST.HVNG.,” the reverse presents the inscription “FORTITVDINI,” surrounded by a laurel wreath and underlaid with crossed standards and flags, maker mark “KAUTSCH” below the portrait, measuring 31.13 mm in diameter, on ring and suspended from a triangular, red-and-white striped ribbon with metal clasp, and in good condition.
2) A round medal for bravery constructed of copper-washed bronze, the obverse depicts the portrait of Karl I circled by the inscription “CAROLVS D.G.IMP.AUST.REX BOH.ETC.ET REX APOST.HVNG.,” the reverse presents the inscription “FORTITVDINI,” surrounded by a laurel wreath and underlaid with crossed standards and flags, maker mark “KAUTSCH” below the portrait, measuring 30.89 mm in diameter, on ring and suspended from a triangular, red-and-white striped ribbon, and in fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
