Militärverdienstkreuz. Instituted in 1849. In silver with red and white enamels, marked with an ""A"" (Vienna), a dog's head (800 silver, used between 1867 and 1922) flanked by a ""3"" (silver fineness) on the left and an ""A"" (Vienna) on the right, and maker marked ""FR"" (Rothe) on the integral ring, measuring 30.7 mm (w) x 34.5 mm (h) inclusive of its integral suspension, chipping evident in the red enamels on the arm at 3 o'clock on the obverse and in the white enamels on the arm at 6 o'clock on the reverse, on its original triangular wartime ribbon with hook and eye, better than very fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
