A fine grouping of two first war period Imperial Austrian Bravery and Service Medals, consisting of 1) A 1917-1918 issue silver bravery medal for officers; a round silver medal; the obverse depicting the rightward facing bust of Kaiser Karl, circumscribed by his name and title; marked “Kautsch” on the obverse; the reverse inscribed “Fortitudini” (Fortitude), within a laurel wreath with Austrian flags in the background; on a loop for suspension; with a correct replacement ribbon and a collector’s tag attached to the reverse; measuring 40.16 mm in diameter; weighing 21.1 grams. 2) An 1890-1985 issue Silver Military Merit Medal (Silberne Militärverdienstmedaille); a round silver medal; the obverse depicting a rightward facing bust of Kaiser Franz Joseph, circumscribed by his name and title; the reverse inscribed “Signum Laudis” (Latin - Sign for Praise) within a wreath consisting of oak and laurel leaves; on a crown for suspension from its correct replacement ribbon; measuring 31.94 mm in diameter; weighing 21.7 grams; both with light contact marks from wear; in overall better than very fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
