Instituted 1881. Type II with Imperial Crown. Military Division. A bronze gilt Maltese cross in patterned green enamels, with die struck swords, obverse centre presenting the crowned Bulgarian Lion on red enamel background, with white enamel surround with motto СЪ НАМИ БОГЪ (God with us) with laurel wreaths below, reverse centre in white enamel with inscription 19 ФЕВРАЛЪ 1878 (18 February 1878), the date of the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano, adorned by large bronze gilt crown with interior red enamels and enameled jewels, measuring 50.2 mm (w) x 94 mm (h - inclusive of crown with horizontally pierced ball suspension with cross), minor enamel loss to reverse 12 o'clock arm, extremely fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
