Of uncertain origins however likely commemorating the 500 year anniversary of the birth of Louis of France, heir apparent to the French throne, exhibiting very early manufacturing characteristics, a thick bronze-gilt white enameled Maltese cross with gilt fleurs-de-lys in each quadrant, with integral eyelet and large bronze gilt loop for neck ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central gilt-edged white enamel medallion bearing a red painted Jerusalem cross; the reverse with a circular central gilt-edged white enamel medallion bearing a red hand painted full-length image of the young Louis in flowing loincloth, circumscribed ‘JNSTI’ and dated ’1264 ‘; loss of enamel from the arms and central medallions, measuring 33.4 mm (w) x 33.8 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring suspension), fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
