Italy, Kingdom. An Order of the Crown in Gold, Commander, by Cravanzola, c.1930

(Ordine della Corona d'Italia). Instituted 1868 by King Vittorio Emanuele II. A white enameled Ruppert Cross set in Gold, arms connected by Savoy knots in each quadrant also in Gold, obverse featuring an Iron Crown of Lombardy with enameled detailing, with a brightly enameled blue background, reverse also in Gold embossed an Italian Kingdom coat of arms with black, red and white enamels, measuring 50.50 mm (w) x 52.90 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring), weighting 16.4 grams, light contact, suspended by original three-stripe neck ribbon, extremely fine. Accompanied by the star of the order, in silver constructed of an faceted eight-pointed star with ball finials, obverse centre in Gold superposed by enameled white four-armed cross with curve edges, presented Savoy knots in each quadrant and featuring a Lombardy Crown on the centre, with blue-enameled background, the reverse with pin assembly and maker’s cartouche E. GARDINO SUCC. CRAVANZOLA ROMA, measuring 77.76 mm (w) x 77.21 mm (h), light contact and minor toned silver, better than extremely fine. Housed in original case of issue, wooden framed and red leather wrapped, lid embossed with cypher of Victor Emmanuel, interior lid makers marked CRAVANZOLA ROMA, velvet medal bed, lightly worn, very fine.

Footnote: The Order of the Crown of Italy was founded as a national order in 1868 by King Vittorio Emanuele II, to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861. It was awarded for civilian and military merit. The order has been suppressed since the foundation of the Republic in 1946. However, it remained as a dynastic order.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
