(Ordem Militar da Torre e Espada do Valor, Lealdade e Mérito). Instituted 1459. Offered is a magnificent Napoleonic example of the Tower & Sword, likely commission for a notable military figure, consisting of six hand detailed arms, each with a Gold eyelet for sewing at each point, centre applique bears a silver gilt sword surrounded by a green enameled wreath of oak leaves on a white enamel background, which is in turn surrounded by a blue enamel ring bearing the motto ""Valor Lealdade e Mérito"" (Valour, Loyalty and Merit), star is topped and adorned by a Gold tower with black enameled details affixed to star base by Gold pins, reverse of the order presents two Gold stays as well as a hinged Gold Pin at 6 o'clock, centre is the proud manufacturers mark of Rundel, Bridge, & Rundell Jewelers to Their Majesties and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, measuring 100 mm (w) x 107 mm (h), with minor period enamel loss with subsequent repair of green laurels, extremely fine and rare.
Footnote: Similar to Lot EG1310, this superb star represents an interesting transition point between sew-on to pin-on stars. It is the opinion of our staff that this particular example, EG1464, was manufactured slightly later than EG1310 as it lacks the hinged order body and was thus another shift towards the pin-on only awards that were manufactured throughout the majority of the 19th Century.
