(Ordem Militar de Sant'Iago da Espada). Instituted 1175. Type III. 1918-Present. A convex multiple rays star consisting of individual faceted rays in silver, obverse centre in Gold presenting a red enameled florid cross with laurels on a white enameled field, with red enamel surround featuring the Motto of the order CIENCIAS, LETRAS, E ARTES (SCIENCE, LETTERS, AND ARTS), with a silver gilt ornate surround, obverse adorned by a finely enameled Sacred Heart of Christ, reverse with principle dual pin assembly, with makers cartouche for Braganca & Moniz, Lisboa, measuring 66 mm (w) x 75.5 mm (h - inclusive of sacred heart), with minor enamel loss to obverse centre, with pleasing patina and several crimped star points, remains fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
