Manufactured c.1865 by French maker Bacqueville as a display example, consisting of a bullion five-pointed star consisting of carefully attached sequins that are bordered by twisted silver bullion wire to give the star definition; between the arms of the stars are twelve rays radiating from the core of the star, constructed of broad flattened aluminum bullion strands, also bordered by twisted silver bullion wire to give definition. The center of the star consists of a silver center plaque of two inter-linked gilded oak and laurel wreaths, surrounded by a broad gilded ring, inscribed “PRO TRENOVATA PATRIA” in capital lettering; the reverse depicts the complex off-white threading that build up the star, with three prongs visible on the reverse from the plaque on the obverse. Measuring 80 mm in diameter, with attractive dark patina from age, in overall extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
