United Kingdom. The A. B. C. of War Medals and Decorations, by W. Augustus Steward, 1915

The A. B. C. of War Medals and Decorations, being the history of the manner in which they were won, and a complete record of their award: their characteristics: how they are named and how they are counterfeited, by W. Augustus Steward, Lieutenant 1st Cadet Battalion "The Rangers", Late Squadron Commander West London Mounted Rifles, Officier d'Académie, Author of "From the Breasts of the Brave", in hardcover, published by Stanley Paul & Company, 31 Essex Street Strand W.C.2, London, marked "First Published in 1915", with the "Preface to the Second Edition" dated February 1918.

The book is divided into two sections: Military Section and Naval Section, documenting the various awards issued by the United Kingdom, along with the few foreign awards achieved by members of the British Army and the Royal Navy. Each award is described in detail, as to its origin, its design, the battle(s) for which it was awarded, the appropriate clasps, and the regiments and/or those attending ships who received it. There is an additional section at the rear of the book entitled Some Continental and Foreign War Medals, with a 1918 Price Guide and the Index at the back.

The exterior in brown cloth, with the text and illustration in maroon on the front cover, as is the text on the spine, containing 438 pages, the text printed in black ink, with some line drawings, on an off-white paper stock, plus multiple black and white plates interspersed throughout, printed on a white matte stock, the plates illustrated with multiple photographs, the first page of photographs near the front of the book with a vellum insert. The book measures 14.5 cm (w) x 21 cm (h) x 4 cm (d), the cover exhibiting wear along the spine and light soiling, with tape repair present at both the front and back inside, the cover having experienced separation from the perfect bound text necessitating the tape repair, the previous owner's name partially obscured on the front free-endpaper, the back free-endpaper with another name in pencil and dated "Dec. 1948".
