(Ordine Equestre di San Gregorio Magno). Instituted on 1 September 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI. Type II. (1880- Issue). Military Division. A red enamelled Maltese cross in silver gilt with ball finials, surmounted by a military trophy suspension, centre obverse featuring the portrait of Saint Gregory on a blue enamelled field, surrounded by a band embossed S. GREGORIUS MAGNUS, centre reverse featuring a blue enamelled field inscribed PRO DEO ET PRINCIPI (For God and Ruler), surrounded by a band embossed GREGORIUS XVI.P.M.ANNOI., reverse of suspension is plain, measuring 37mm (w) x 55mm (h- inclusive of military trophy suspension), very scattered gilt wear, loss of blue enamel on reverse central medallion, enamel on arms intact, on original ribbon, near very fine condition.
Footnote: The Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great was established on September 1, 1831, by Pope Gregory XVI, seven months after his election to that seat by the College of Cardinals. The Order of St. Gregory the Great is one of the five Orders of Knighthood of the Holy See, and is the fourth in order of precedence. The military division was awarded to military personnel and Papal troops who saw action in the defence of the Holy See in battle and wartime. Until 1905, the number of knights was restricted to 300.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
