Germany, Imperial. A 1914 Iron Cross II Class, with Wartime Commemorative Case
(Eisernes Kreuz 1914 II. Klasse). Reinstituted 5 August 1914. (1914-1918 issue). Constructed of iron and silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of a Cross Pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central initial “W”, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1914”, the twelve o’clock arm with a royal crown, the reverse with three central oak leaves, the six o’clock arm with an initial institution date of “1813”, the twelve o’clock arm with initials “FW” topped by a royal crown, the suspension loop marked with a silver content number of “938”, measuring 42.14 mm (w) x 45.42 mm (h), weighing 19.8 grams, accompanied by a wartime commemorative presentation case, constructed of a card stock frame with a faux purple leather exterior, the lid bearing a silver embossed depiction of the award, above dates “1914-1915”, the interior with a padded white satin lid liner and Imperial tri-colour style ribbon, with a depressed velvet medal bed, unmarked, measuring 76 mm (w) x 88 mm (l) x 22 mm (h), with age-appropriate material fatigue evident to the case, a unique set in overall near extremely fine condition.
