A textbook example of an Iron Cross 1939 First Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1939 1. Klasse) by Fritz Zimmermann of Stuttgart; a cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border; the obverse with a raised central mobile swastika with the re-institution date “1939” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse plain, with a slender banjo style vertical pinback, a barrel hinge, and a slightly rounded catch; maker marked “6.” for Fritz Zimmermann, Stuttgart - also displaying Zimmermann’s typical die-flaw in the form of a indent in the ribs on the bottom half of the three o’clock arm; measuring 44.05 mm (w) x 44.01 mm (h); weighing 17.9 grams. Accompanied by its presentation case; constructed of heavy pressed paper, with a faux leather (leatherette) exterior, with an outline of an Iron Cross embossed in silver on the exterior; lined interior lid, with a functional spring catch with stud release; intact interior fabric hinge cover and functional exterior metal hinge; measuring 69 mm (w) x 70 mm (h); the cross with the core well preserved, with light contact marks on the frame, as well as light patina on the frame from age; in overall better than very fine condition.
