A textbook example of an Iron Cross 1939 First Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1939 1. Klasse) screwback version by Schauerte & Höfeld, Lüdenscheid; a cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border; the obverse with a raised central mobile swastika with the re-institution date “1939” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse plain, with a screw-back assembly consisting of a theaded nut and a threaded stud with a backing plate attached; maker marked “L/54” for “Schauerte & Höfeld, Lüdenscheid” - also displaying Schauerte & Höfeld’s typical trademark filled numeral “1”; measuring 44.10 mm (w) x 44.21 mm (h); weighing 17.2 rams; the core of the cross well preserved, with attractive patina on the frame from age; in overall very fine condition.
