Great Britain. An Army Field Marshal's Side Cap
Fabricated from a black wool with fold down flaps also in black wool on either side, the flaps held up with silvered metal hooks fed through black threaded loops, with two rising peaks forming a valley between the two panels, the valley in red wool, the top edge of both rising peaks and the fold down flaps trimmed in gold-coloured bullion wire in a thatched pattern, the front with two 14 mm wide brass buttons, each of the buttons bearing the Field Marshal's insignia and holding the two ends of the flaps together. There is a 43 mm (w) x 54 mm (h) Field Marshal's insignia sewn in place on the left side, the insignia in silvered and gold-coloured bullion wire, in various textures, the crossed sword and baton in bands of silver, the void of the crown in maroon felt, red embroidery representing the ears, tongue and crown on the lion, touches of red, green and blue embroidery in the base of the main crown, black threading giving definition to the lion, main crown, and crossed sword and baton where it butts the wreathing. The inside is lined in a black rayon, with a 12 mm wide black satin sweatband, the cap measuring 300 mm (w) x 110 mm (h) and free of mothing. Near mint.
