(Orden Philipps den Großmütigen, Ritterkreuz 1. Klasse, mit Schwertern und Krone). Issued 1881-1918. A silver cross pattee with white enameled arms, with crossed swords between the arms of the cross; the obverse with a central light blue enameled medallion depicting the rightward facing outline of Philipp in bronze gilt, surrounded by a ring of white enamels, inscribed “Si Deus Nobiscum Quis Contra Nos” (Latin - If God is with us, who is against us); the reverse with an enameled Hessian lion on a central blue enameled medallion, surrounded by a ring of white enamels, inscribed by the name and title of King Ludwig; on a swivel crown and loop for suspension from its period original ribbon; measuring 36.52 mm (w) x 36.81 mm (h); weighing 23.9 grams; in overall extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
