Type I. Instituted on March 18th 1814. (Orden vom Eisernen Helm Brabant Kreuz). In silvered iron (magnetic); the obverse constructed of a traditional Brabant cross with a partial knightly armour attached to the front via two rivets on the reverse; on a loop for suspension from a very short period original ribbon - accompanied by a slightly longer correct replacement ribbon; maker marked “Kumpff” on the reverse; measuring 46.38 mm (w) x 66.07 mm (h); weighing 26.0 grams; in overall very fine condition.
Footnote: 73 Type I crosses were awarded on September 22nd 1814. These original crosses were the ""Brabant"" ball-tipped version. This was later altered for the 1815 awards (63) to the more closely Iron Cross shaped version.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
