Italy, Kingdom. An Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus, I Class Commander, c.1910

(Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro). Instituted in 1572 by Pope Gregory XIII at the request of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy. A four point silver star, each arm consisting of a cluster of nine faceted rays of increasing lengths, obverse centre in Gold depicting a white enameled Shamrock Cross with green enameled fans in each quadrant with small ball finials, reverse centre presents a principal pin assemble with dual stays, measuring 80mm (w) x 80mm (h), centre insignia loose, several hairline cracks in white enamel cross, chip in the 5 o’clock corner of the green enamel fan, near very fine condition.

Footnote: The Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus was an amalgamation of two separate orders, the Order of Saint Maurice, founded in 1434, with the medieval Order of Saint Lazarus, founded circa 1119. The shamrock cross represents the former while the green fans represent the maltese cross of the latter. The Order was formerly awarded by the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) with the heads of the House of Savoy as the Kings of Italy. Originally a chivalric order of noble nature, it was restricted to subjects of noble families with proofs of at least eight noble great-grandparents.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
