Instituted 1800. Of fine early quality, in 18k Gold, formed by a golden round shield with six sets Gold rays with white enameled lilies in each quadrant, obverse centre applique bearing the enameled image of St. Ferdinand, edged by a blue-enameled surround with the motto ""FIDEI ET MERITO"", reverse centre with black enameled lettering in script Ferd:IV Inst:anno 1800, Gold hallmarked on both integral ring and ring suspension 750 Gold content, measuring 38 mm (w) x 59.3 mm (h - inclusive of ornate crown and integral ring suspension), with enamel loss and old repairs, on original period ribbon, with a slight wiggle to the rays and lilies between the ten and three o'clock position, remains good/fine and rare.

Footnote: Established on 1 April 1800 by Ferdinand IV of Naples and III Sicily to reward men who performed important deeds and gave proof of loyalty to the Head of the Royal House and to the Royal Family.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
