(Medalla al Mérito Militar). Instituted 1863. 1863-1865 issue. In bronze, with the obverse depicting detailed engraved bust of Maximiliano I, surrounded by the inscription MAXIMILIANO EMPERADOR (Emperor Maximilian), reverse engraved with the inscription AL MERITO MILITAR (To Military Merit) surrounded by detailed laurel wreath, marked maker’s mark Navalon G., measuring 32.54 mm (w) x 36.60 mm (h - inclusive of the integral ring), with minor toned bronze, accompanied by replacement ribbon, extremely good conditions.
Footnote: The Military Merit Medal was instituted in Mexico by Maximiliano I in 1863. It was founded to award his Mexican Officers and enlisted men, in the army and local militia, who fought for him against the republican Mexican forces.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
