(Cruz por la Intervención Francesa). Instituted 1867. 1867-1868 Issue. A four armed cross in bronze with ball finials, featuring clusters of rays in each quadrant, obverse displaying the inscription PREMIO AL PATRIOTISMO - COOPERÓ A LA DEFENSA DE LA REPÚBLICA CONTRA EL EJERCITO FRANCES (Award to Patriotism - He Served to the Defense of the Republic against the French Army), with reverse depicting the inscription DISTINTIVO AL VALOR - COMBATIÓ POR LA INDEPENDENCIA Y LAS INSTITUCIONES REPUBLICANAS (Valor Distinctive - He Fought for the Independence and the Republican Institutions), measuring 45.12 mm (w) x 48.11 mm (h - inclusive of the integral ring), accompanied by replacement ribbon, with toned bronze, near to extremely fine.
Footnote: The Cross for the French Intervention was instituted in Mexico in 1867, to award Mexican republican officers and enlisted men who fought throughout the war against the French Army from 1862 to 1867.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
