1863-67 Issue. Crowned Eagle. Type III. Civil Merit Division. In finely toned silver, a four armed cross with red, white, and green enameling, dual ball finials on each arm, obverse centre in gilt depicting an enameled our lady of guadalupe, reverse centre with "AL MERITO Y VIRTUDES" denoting civil merit, with characteristic eagle suspension with an crowned eagle clutching a snake in talons, maker's mark on ring for Arthus Bertrand & Co., measuring 37 mm (w) x 63 mm (h - inclusive of eagle suspension and integral ring suspension), with enamel loss and original silk ribbon, very fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
