(Orden de Vasco Nuñez de Balboa). Instituted 1937. 1937 - Present Issue. In silver gilt and white enamels, a four-armed cross with green enameled laurels in each quadrant, obverse centre in white enamels featuring a silver gilded bust of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa surrounded by the inscription ORDER OF VASCO NUÑEZ DE BALBOA, reverse without enamels depicting an engraved map of Panama encircled by the inscription REPUBLICA DE PANAMA (Republic of Panama), marked twice with Dutch silver hallmark since 1953 denoting fineness of 835, measuring 59.52 mm (w) x 63.96 mm (h - inclusive of integral ball), presenting minor lost of gilt, accompanied by original neck ribbon, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa was founded in Panama by presidential decree in 1937 to reward national and foreigners for meritorious services rendered to the country in the fields of diplomacy and international relations. The Commander is granted exclusively to Ministries, Councils, tradesmen, and Colonels.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
